The Platypus

There is no question when you think of one of the oddest animals in the world, the platypus ranks near the top. They look like an odd cross between a beaver and a duck. Not only do they look weird, but they are also one of the strangest mammals on the planet. Some of the features most attributed to mammals are having hair or fur, producing milk, and giving birth to live young. While the platypus does have fur, they actually lay eggs, a feature rarely seen in mammals. The males of the species also have spurs on the inner sides of their legs which they can use to inject venom. Venom is another rarity among mammals. They are truly a remarkable animal.

As San Diegans, we are extremely lucky in that we have two platypuses at the San Diego Wild Animal Park (as a local, I refuse to call it by its updated name). In fact, this is the only place you can see platypuses outside of Australia. I can say from experience, they are a must see. They are the most adorable, odd little creatures. Go check them out for yourself!
